Sound Like a Pro Leading Requirements Conversations with These Phrases
Effective communication skills for successfully navigating the requirements-gathering process
To ensure a successful discussion of requirements, practising active listening, communicating clearly, and asking insightful questions is essential. This approach uncovers hidden assumptions and significantly reduces the risk of misunderstandings among everybody involved.
In this article, I suggest some questions you can use to steer the requirements-gathering process in meetings and emails.
Getting a summary of where we are
It’s important to remind everyone of the overall objective, especially for those on the call who have not participated in face-to-face discussions or are joining the second or third requirements-gathering session.
Try these questions:
“Could you provide an overview of what the ask is?”
“What’s the background rationale or this?”
“Could you give us a reminder of the story so far for this requirement?”
